Many of you (our listeners) have desired to learn the difference between synthetic oil changes and standard oil changes. Below Utah Car Cents will discuss the major differences between the two; including pricing, environmental issues and what type of vehicle needs what to run efficiently.
Synthetic vs. Standard Oil Change:
The form and function of synthetic oil is far greater than your standard oil. Standard oil breaks down much faster with increase in heat and has a decrease in longevity. Cost can range up to twice the dollar amount of a conventional oil change. To the average motor enthusiast does the performance enhancing characteristics of the synthetic oil make it worth the extra dough?
Yes or no does not cover all the variables, but here are a few things to consider:
- Synthetic oil is derived from chemicals that are as equally harmful to the environment as petroleum (conventional oil).
- Your wallet will see the same amount of money being spent when you consider how many more conventional oil changes you'll need compared to synthetic oil changes.
- 4-5 (every 3000 miles) in Conventional changes a year; compared to 2 (every 7500 miles) for Synthetic changes.
- Based on research synthetic is cleaner but not necessarily greener for the world because it is produced in a laboratory not naturally.
- Research has also shown that synthetics tend to provide less resistance in the engine of your vehicle. In turn, could extend life of the engine.
- Partially synthetic oil blend allows you to purchase a better oil for a lesser price than a "true" synthetic change but does not increase the longevity of the oil itself. Definitely a preference on the buyer.
Other options are being researched daily to help eliminate greenhouse gases and production facility marks on the earth but for now, make the best decision you possibly can as the educated motor enthusiast.
