Synthetic Vs. Standard Oil Changes

Many of you (our listeners) have desired to learn the difference between synthetic oil changes and standard oil changes.  Below Utah Car Cents will discuss the major differences between the two; including pricing, environmental issues and what type of vehicle needs what to run efficiently.

Synthetic vs. Standard Oil Change:

The form and function of synthetic oil is far greater than your standard oil.  Standard oil breaks down much faster with increase in heat and has a decrease in longevity.  Cost can range up to twice the dollar amount of a conventional oil change.  To the average motor enthusiast does the performance enhancing characteristics of the synthetic oil make it worth the extra dough?

Yes or no does not cover all the variables, but here are a few things to consider:
  1. Synthetic oil is derived from chemicals that are as equally harmful to the environment as petroleum (conventional oil).
  2. Your wallet will see the same amount of money being spent when you consider how many more conventional oil changes you'll need compared to synthetic oil changes.
  3. 4-5 (every 3000 miles) in Conventional changes a year; compared to 2 (every 7500 miles) for Synthetic changes.
  4. Based on research synthetic is cleaner but not necessarily greener for the world because it is produced in a laboratory not naturally.
  5. Research has also shown that synthetics tend to provide less resistance in the engine of your vehicle.  In turn, could extend life of the engine.
  6. Partially synthetic oil blend allows you to purchase a better oil for a lesser price than a "true" synthetic change but does not increase the longevity of the oil itself.  Definitely a preference on the buyer.
Other options are being researched daily to help eliminate greenhouse gases and production facility marks on the earth but for now, make the best decision you possibly can as the educated motor enthusiast.

50 Strong Years...Porsche 911.

One of the most influential models EVER turns 50 this year.  The Porsche 911.
Throughout the years Stuttgart has released breathtaking designs, revolutionary mechanics and are still going strong.

F Model
The very first 911 was released in 1963.  It was deemed the "F Model".  Notice the futuristic curvature and the beautiful engineering.  Unveiled at the Frankfurt International Auto Show about two years before it was re-named to the 911.

991
Not much has changed in fifty years as far as tradition goes, but much has changed with design and power.  The 991 released in 2011 is the capstone for the Porsche family.  Technical advancements help Porsche describe it as their "epitome" of Porsche Intelligent Performance.

Visit the Porsche Mini Site and learn all about all 50 years of the 911.

Utah Car Cents would like to recognize the Porsche company and tip our hats to 50 years of beautiful vehicles!  Don't miss our show tomorrow from 10AM-NOON on 1280 The Zone or 97.5FM.  Thanks to all of our listeners!  Let us know how Porsche has or has not influenced your love for cars over the past 50 years!  Visit us on Utah Car Cents Facebook and leave us a post!

HYUNDAI WANTS TO MAKE A PICKUP ?

According to a report from Car and Driver, Hyundai may be considering development for a new Pickup, -“We do not have a pickup truck. Other than that, we cover almost every segment. We are studying that one very hard—what kind of pickup truck we should produce, if we have to. Is it a big-size pickup truck like in the United States or a small kind of pickup truck?” Lee added, “We are doing a good job in recent years without a pickup truck. A pickup truck is important, but it’s not a big priority for our company. But we have to consider how to respond. It is under study.”
